In a desolate expanse of Desert Hot Springs, California, the body of 30-year-old Brianna Chavez of Los Angeles was discovered on the evening of Sunday, March 15, 2026. Authorities were called to the remote area of Mission Creek Road and Worsley Road around 5:15 p.m. for a report of a possible death. Upon arrival, they found Chavez in the open desert, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation, which began as a suspicious death inquiry, was quickly reclassified as a homicide as detectives determined she had been killed earlier that day, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The investigation swiftly led to the identification of a suspect, 29-year-old Aaron Espinoza, a resident of Desert Hot Springs. With the assistance of several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and the Riverside County District Attorney's Office Gang Impact Team, Espinoza was tracked to the U.S.-Mexico border. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, just two days after Chavez's body was found, Espinoza was taken into custody in San Luis, Arizona.
Following his arrest, the Riverside County District Attorney's office filed multiple charges against Espinoza, including first-degree murder, child endangerment, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Espinoza is being held without bail and is awaiting extradition from Arizona to Riverside County to face these charges. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting and the relationship between Chavez and Espinoza have not been publicly disclosed by authorities.
