In the late afternoon of February 23, 2026, a routine traffic stop on a rural highway near Highlandville, Missouri, turned into a harrowing and tragic event. Deputy Sheriff Gabriel Ramirez, a 30-year-old United States Army veteran who had been with the Christian County Sheriff's Office for nearly a year, initiated the stop of a truck on State Highway 160 and Route HH.
The driver of the truck, later identified as 45-year-old Richard Dean Bird, had reportedly sped past a stopped school bus that was in the process of letting children off. In an act of sudden and shocking violence, Bird opened fire on Deputy Ramirez, who was found deceased at the scene by his fellow officers when they responded to a "deputy down" call.
The shooting of Deputy Ramirez triggered an intense and widespread manhunt for Richard Dean Bird. Law enforcement agencies from across the region, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, converged on the area to locate the suspect. Bird's truck was discovered abandoned several miles away near Reeds Spring, prompting a focused search in the surrounding woods. As the search intensified into the early hours of February 24, officers detected a heat signature in a wooded area. As they approached, Bird once again opened fire on the assembled law enforcement officers.
The ensuing shootout resulted in more tragedy. Christian County Deputy Michael Hislope was fatally shot as he attempted to rescue other wounded deputies. Two other officers, one from Christian County and another from Webster County, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. In the exchange of gunfire, Richard Dean Bird was shot and killed, bringing an end to the violent rampage. Investigations later revealed that Bird was a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history, including a previous incident where he had fired at a law enforcement officer.
