In the bright afternoon sun of a September day in Buffalo, New York, violence shattered the calm. Ahmen R. Lester, a 34-year-old African-American man, was ambushed in a brazen drive-by shooting on September 10, 2010. Gunmen opened fire from a passing vehicle around 1:30 p.m., ending his life in a shocking act of public violence that sent ripples of fear through the local community. Lester had a history of surviving violence, having been shot on two prior occasions in 1992 and 2003.
