In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 7, 2026, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of the Seth Ward neighborhood in Plainview, Texas, leaving five people dead, including 21-year-old Reily Joseph Zavala Barrientos. Barrientos, a Hispanic male, was gravely injured in the shooting and was rushed to Covenant Hospital-Plainview, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Born in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico, on November 20, 2004, he had moved to Texas in 2025 with aspirations of building a better life. He worked as a roofer and was known by friends and family for his kind and gentle spirit.
The Hale County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene in the 2700 block of Upchurch Street at approximately 3:40 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered four adults who had been fatally shot. The deceased were identified as Hector Alonso Sanchez, 28; Tanya Paola Valadez Rangel, 30; Rosalba Saenz Rodriguez, 47; and the man authorities identified as the assailant, 33-year-old Saul Villa. Villa was also pronounced dead at the scene, leading investigators to treat the case as a quadruple murder-suicide.
The Texas Rangers have taken the lead in the ongoing investigation into the mass shooting. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the attack or clarified the relationship between Villa and the victims. While the investigation continues, the Texas Department of Public Safety has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
