On the night of February 8, 2026, Antoine Latham, a 56-year-old man, was working as a Lyft driver in Cleveland, Ohio, a side job he had taken on for about four months to supplement his income from his primary job transporting children with disabilities. His fiancée had spoken to him shortly before he decided to take one last ride for the night, a decision that would tragically be his final one.
That evening, he picked up 20-year-old Derrek Dove and at least two other unidentified individuals for a drop-off near East 102nd Street and Rosehill Avenue.
During the ride, the passengers intended to rob Latham. In the course of the robbery, a gun was fired, and Latham was struck in the head. After being shot, his vehicle crashed into a guardrail near Rosehill Avenue and Woodhill Road. The suspects then fled the scene. Emergency services responded, and Latham was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Family members were devastated by the news, which they received from detectives the following afternoon. They described Latham as a hardworking, caring, and deeply faithful man who was a beloved father, grandfather, and jokester.
An investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police, utilizing Lyft records, phone records, and video surveillance, led them to Derrek Dove. Dove, a resident of Garfield Heights, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. On February 17, 2026, a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Dove on several charges, including aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, and felonious assault.
During an arraignment hearing on February 19, Dove pleaded not guilty, and his bond was set at $1 million. Prosecutors described the act as a "cold and deliberate act of murder." The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to search for at least two other suspects who were with Dove at the time of the incident. There is currently no evidence linking this case to the shooting of another Lyft driver that occurred two days later.
