A simmering family dispute in a Farmers Branch apartment on a Sunday afternoon culminated in the shooting death of 41-year-old Joel Brown, Jr. The tragic events unfolded on February 15, 2026, leading to the arrest of his 22-year-old nephew, Dayvion Murray. The residence, which the two men shared with Murray's mother, became a crime scene after a confrontation escalated to fatal violence.
The conflict began when Murray denied his mother and Brown entry into their shared apartment in the
11600 block of Lago Vista West. An argument ignited between Murray and his mother, prompting Brown to intervene. It was at this point that Murray allegedly brandished a firearm and shot his uncle multiple times. Brown was discovered by police inside the apartment with gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen and did not survive his injuries. Murray's mother was not physically harmed during the incident.
In a surprising turn, two 911 calls were made to the police regarding the shooting. One was from the victim's sister, and the other was from Murray himself, who reportedly admitted to dispatchers that he had shot his uncle. When officers arrived at the scene, they ordered Murray out of the apartment and took him into custody without incident.
Following the incident, Dayvion Murray was arrested and charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Dallas County Jail, with his bail set at $500,000. In his statement to the police, Murray claimed his mother had attacked him and that Brown had charged at him before he fired the weapon. He also admitted to shooting Brown again while he was on the ground.
