On November 16, 2010, Leon Wilson, a 46-year-old Oakland resident, was tragically shot and killed outside the Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland. Wilson, who had been attending classes at the church to earn his GED, was reportedly lured outside by a phone call before being shot. The incident occurred as the church celebrated receiving a significant grant to combat violence in the community.
Wilson's death underscored the ongoing challenges of addressing violence in Oakland, as no immediate arrests were made following the incident.
