A verbal dispute over alcohol tragically escalated into fatal violence, claiming the life of 28-year-old Tabatha Jones on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. The young woman was shot and killed in her home, and her own mother has been charged with the crime.
The incident unfolded in the afternoon at a residence in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane. At approximately 3:56 p.m., Jones herself managed to call 911, telling dispatchers that her mother had shot her in the side.
Officers, who were already in the vicinity, responded to the scene within minutes.
Upon arrival, police found Tabatha Jones in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to her injuries about an hour later. At the scene, officers arrested the victim's 49-year-old mother, Shanika Battle. Battle and her daughter were the only two individuals present in the home when the police arrived.
According to the arrest affidavit, the argument began when Battle became upset with Jones for taking an alcoholic beverage that belonged to her. Battle also claimed that her daughter was "going into rooms that aren't hers." During the ensuing confrontation, Battle allegedly retrieved her. 380-caliber pistol. While she later admitted to police that the gun was hers and that she had pulled it from her purse to "scare" her daughter, she denied firing the weapon.
A search of the home by investigators uncovered a pistol in the living room near Battle's purse and a. 380 casing in the hallway outside of Jones's bedroom. Shanika Battle was taken into custody and has been charged with murder. She is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail.
