In Pharr, Texas, a domestic dispute escalated into violence, leading to the death of 45-year-old Randy Luna Herrera on January 3, 2026. The incident unfolded late on a Sunday night at a residence on the 700 block of Chickadee Street. Pharr police responded to a call around 11:35 p.m. regarding a shooting and discovered Herrera unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting began earlier in the evening when Herrera's common-law wife, Perla Lizeth Cruz, arrived at the residence to drop off her children. An altercation ensued, prompting Cruz to leave with her daughter. Later that evening, Herrera reportedly called Cruz, who was in Edinburg, and threatened to shoot her in the face if she did not return by midnight. He also allegedly threatened to shoot 18-year-old Emanuel Ibarra Flores if he didn't remove his property from the garage.
Cruz alerted Flores to the threats, urging him to get his belongings from the house. Flores, an Edcouch resident, went to the residence and, according to police, admitted to shooting Herrera multiple times with a rifle. Flores stated that he acted because Cruz had informed him that Herrera was going to shoot both of them. He placed the rifle inside his Chevrolet Silverado before officers arrived.
Emanuel Ibarra Flores was arrested at the scene without incident and has been charged with murder. He was taken into custody and is being held on a $750,000 bond. Randy L. Herrera is survived by his wife, children, mother, and siblings.
