The investigation led to the arrest of Rodrigo Eugenio Reyes, a 32-year-old
acquaintance of Avitia. Reyes was charged with capital murder, accused of shooting and killing Avitia during a confrontation at Avitia's home. According to court documents, Reyes claimed that he confronted Avitia after an altercation involving Reyes' girlfriend. The situation escalated, resulting in a physical confrontation and ultimately, the shooting.
In March 2016, a jury found Reyes guilty of capital murder. The court sentenced Reyes to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The Avitia family expressed relief and hope that Reyes' sentence would prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.
