Jose Juan Mendez, a 41-year-old Hispanic male from Pharr, Texas, tragically passed away on July 4, 2020. The circumstances surrounding his death were part of a larger homicide investigation that led to multiple arrests and charges. Four individuals—Abraham Gonzalez, Blanca Gutierrez, Flor Alexis Serrano, and Juan Gustavo—were charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery, and engaging in organized criminal activity. The investigation began when Pharr police responded to a welfare check at Mendez's residence on Feather Avenue, where they discovered his body.
The suspects were accused of seeking money and drugs from Mendez's residence. According to the probable cause affidavit, Gonzalez and Castellanos held Mendez at gunpoint while Gutierrez and Serrano searched the residence. During the struggle, the suspects fired handguns at Mendez and fled the scene. Gonzalez returned to the residence and took a vehicle before leaving. All four suspects faced significant bond amounts and potential life sentences for their involvement in Mendez's death.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigators worked alongside Pharr police to bring the suspects to justice.
