On a quiet Wednesday afternoon in Ocala, Florida, 64-year-old Harold Whitt Harper was enjoying one of his first days back in his beloved garden following neck surgery. His wife had just stepped inside their home in the city's historic district when a single gunshot shattered the peace of the neighborhood on January 7, 2026. She rushed back outside to find her husband lying in the front yard, fatally wounded.
Harper succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The tragic incident appeared to be a random act of violence. Just before the shooting, at approximately 3:35 p.m., the Ocala Police Department had received a call about a suspicious person nearby. A driver reported a man dressed in black who motioned for him to stop before appearing to load a pistol. Shortly after, a second 911 call reported the shooting.
Responding officers quickly located a man matching the suspect's description just two blocks from the crime scene. The individual, identified as 29-year-old Isaac Ezekiel Toye, was found with a pistol in his possession and was taken into custody. Toye, a military veteran who had been discharged from the Army after less than 18 months of service, was arrested and charged with homicide and two counts of aggravated assault.
Investigators have found no connection between Toye and Harper, leading them to believe the attack was senseless and without motive. Police stated that Toye had been living in the Brandon area before leaving his apartment less than six weeks prior to the incident and may have been staying at a homeless camp in Marion County. He is currently being held at the Marion County Jail without bond. The investigation into the horrific event is ongoing.
