It was there that 19-year-old Jerrod Jermaine Dorsey was struck by a bullet shortly after 2 a.m. on January 11, 2026. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. His family, who had been anticipating a wedding after his recent proposal to his girlfriend, were instead faced with planning a funeral.

Reba Dorsey, expressed her profound grief and disbelief, stating that she was certain the bullets were not meant for her son. She described Jerrod as someone who was not involved in the type of lifestyle that would lead to such a violent end. The incident was part of a particularly violent weekend in the Baton Rouge area, which saw a total of twelve shootings from Thursday through Sunday. These events resulted in six additional deaths, many of whom were teenagers, and left seven others with injuries.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the shooting that claimed Jerrod's life. However, authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case. The shooting on Maverick Avenue was one of two separate incidents deputies responded to that Sunday, with another person being injured in a separate event on Riverdale Avenue East.
