Kevin D. Commander, a 59-year-old Black male from High Point, North Carolina, died on January 12, 2026, following a shooting at a local gas station. The incident began as a verbal argument inside the Circle K on East Parris Avenue between Commander and a store clerk.
The altercation escalated and moved outside the convenience store, where the clerk allegedly shot Commander. High Point Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 6:35 p.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered Commander suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Kiheem T. Sessoms of High Point, fled the scene after the shooting. He later surrendered to the police. Sessoms was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Following Commander's death, the charge was upgraded to murder. Sessoms is being held in the Guilford County Jail in High Point, and a judge set his bond at $350,000 during his first court appearance. The High Point Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the homicide.
