On the evening of Friday, November 28, 2025, a gathering at a rural residence west of Goldfield, Iowa, turned into a tragedy when a firearm incident claimed the life of a young man. Around 8:19 p.m., the Humboldt County Dispatch Center received a frantic 911 call reporting a shooting at a home located on 210th Street. Emergency responders, including deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and Wright County Sheriff’s Office, as well as personnel from the Eagle Grove Police
Department and local ambulance services, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered 26-year-old George Filmalter in the dining room of the residence, where he had been socializing with several other individuals. The investigation revealed that the male victim had been handling a handgun during the gathering. Witnesses present at the scene stated that Filmalter was under the mistaken impression that the weapon was unloaded at the time. While handling the firearm, he inadvertently discharged a round into his own body, sustaining fatal injuries. Despite the presence of others and the response of emergency services, he succumbed to the wound.
Detectives and the Humboldt County Medical Examiner conducted an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death to determine if any criminal element was involved. Following interviews with the witnesses and an examination of the scene, law enforcement officials concluded that there was no evidence of foul play, nor did they find any indication that Filmalter intended to harm himself. The shooting was officially ruled an accident stemming from the belief that the gun was empty. Consequently, no suspects were sought, and no arrests were made in connection with the case. The Sheriff’s Office later issued a statement regarding the incident, emphasizing the critical importance of treating all firearms as if they are loaded.
