On November 29, 2025, 18-year-old Koetay Leonidas Vitore Dreaming Bear, an Oglala Lakota male, lost his life to gun violence in Oglala, South Dakota. Born in Pine Ridge to parents Harland Dreaming Bear and Candida Bagola, Koetay was a resident of the Oglala community at the time of the incident. His death marked a tragic end for the young man, who was subsequently described in his obituary as having made his journey to the Spirit World surrounded by the legacy of his extended family, including
numerous siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.
The fatal shooting reportedly took place on a Saturday night within the boundaries of the Oglala Sioux Reservation. Following the violent altercation that led to Koetay's death, the alleged shooter fled the immediate scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. The investigation quickly extended beyond the reservation's borders as authorities tracked the individual involved.
On Sunday, the day immediately following the shooting, Rapid City Police located and apprehended a suspect in Rapid City, South Dakota. Reports indicated that the individual had fled to the city after the incident on the reservation.
