On December 3, 2025, authorities in Greenville, South Carolina, responded to what initially appeared to be a traffic accident involving a single vehicle found off the side of a busy county road. Upon closer inspection, deputies discovered the driver, identified as 25-year-old male Nicholas Daniel Rios, had suffered a gunshot wound rather than injuries consistent with a crash.
The incident was quickly reclassified from a collision investigation to a violent crime inquiry as investigators determined the shooting stemmed from a road rage encounter that occurred earlier that Wednesday.
Rios was transported to a local hospital where he fought for his life for several days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 2025. Following his death, the coroner’s office confirmed the identity and cause of death, prompting law enforcement to upgrade the charges in the case. Rios, who was born in Miami, Florida, was remembered by his family and community as a spirited individual with a generous heart. In a final act of service, he was an organ donor, a decision his family noted would allow others to live on.
The investigation led to the arrest of a suspect, Steve Strickland, who was initially taken into custody on charges of attempted murder following the shooting. After Rios died from his wounds, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office upgraded the charge against Strickland to murder. Strickland was held at the Greenville County Detention Center without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system. Rios was survived by his parents, siblings, and extended family, who held a memorial service to honor his life at a chapel in Pelzer shortly after his passing.
