On the evening of December 11, 2025, a violent tragedy unfolded within the Stone Oak community of San Antonio, Texas, claiming the life of Julie Katherine Harrell. The 60-year-old female was inside an apartment complex located on the 20000 block of Stone Oak Parkway when a disturbance broke out. Around 8:45 p.m., a witness in the residence overheard a heated argument between Harrell and a male companion, followed by the terrifying sound of gunfire echoing through the home.
Upon
investigating the noise, the witness entered the room and discovered a harrowing scene. The observer reportedly saw the male individual turn the weapon on himself, inflicting a fatal injury. Harrell was found lying on the floor, unresponsive. Emergency responders were immediately summoned to the apartment, but upon their arrival, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. The tranquility of the usually quiet far north-side neighborhood was shattered as investigators cordoned off the area to piece together the events that led to the loss of life.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later conducted autopsies to formally determine the causes of death. Harrell’s death was ruled a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds. The male subject was identified as 59-year-old Vernon Andrew Bonilla Jr., and his death was ruled a suicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head. Police described the relationship between Harrell and Bonilla as a dating partnership, indicating that the violence was domestic in nature.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the San Antonio Police Department launched an investigation but quickly determined that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities stated they were not seeking any additional suspects in connection with the case, as the sole perpetrator had died by his own hand at the scene. Consequently, no arrests were made, and the case was effectively closed following the medical examiner's findings, leaving the community to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a neighbor.
