On the afternoon of December 19, 2025, Desirae "Dezz" Martin, a 29-year-old female, was fatally shot inside a residence in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The incident occurred at a home located in the 1100 block of Berkshire Court where Martin was working as a caregiver for an elderly woman. Las Cruces Police Department officers responded to a call regarding the shooting at approximately 4:30 p.m., initiated by the elderly resident who was present during the altercation.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officials learned that a male suspect had barricaded himself inside the house after attacking Martin.
The situation escalated into a standoff requiring the deployment of the Las Cruces Police Department's SWAT team, hostage negotiators, and K-9 units. Authorities attempted to establish communication with the barricaded suspect for several hours but received no response. Around 7:30 p.m., approximately three hours after the initial call, SWAT officers made entry into the residence. Inside, they discovered the lifeless body of the suspect, identified only as a 38-year-old man. Police reported that he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No arrests were made in connection with the case due to the death of the sole suspect, and investigators classified the event as a murder-suicide.
Desirae Martin, who had recently moved to the area and was a graduate of Weber State University in Utah, was formally identified by authorities several days later. Known to her friends and family as a talented singer and actress active in the local theater scene, she had been planning to return to Salt Lake City for the holidays. Following the tragedy, her family expressed their devastation, describing her as a selfless individual who was dedicated to helping others through her work in criminal justice and caregiving. The investigation concluded with the determination that the assailant acted alone before taking his own life.
