In the small town of Bath, New Hampshire, a quiet afternoon was shattered by the sound of gunfire on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Responding to a 911 call reporting shots fired at a home on Tyler Way around 1:15 p.m., Bath Police officers arrived to a grim scene. Inside the residence, they discovered the bodies of two women, 67-year-old Cindy Moody, a female, and her 39-year-old daughter, Kristal Moody.
Both women appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
At the scene, officers encountered Cindy Moody's brother-in-law, 73-year-old Charles “Chuck” Readey, who was armed with a firearm. After a brief period, Readey was safely taken into custody. An investigation into the double homicide revealed a history of escalating family tensions. Readey had reportedly grown increasingly frustrated with his sister-in-law, Cindy, living in the basement of his home. Just a day before the fatal shootings, Readey had contacted the Bath Police Department to express his frustration over the living arrangement, stating that Cindy did not contribute to bills or rent.
The conflict reached a tragic and violent climax on that Tuesday afternoon. According to court documents, Readey admitted to the killings. He told investigators he first shot his niece, Kristal, through a closed door before turning the weapon on his sister-in-law, Cindy. Autopsies later confirmed that both women died from gunshot wounds to the chest, and their deaths were ruled homicides.
Following the incident, Charles Readey was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder for knowingly causing the deaths of Cindy and Kristal Moody. He was held without bail pending further court proceedings. The authorities have indicated that they are not seeking any other suspects in connection with the double homicide.
