Nathan Thomas Kaas, 48, male, White/Caucasian, died on October 12, 2025, during an off-duty hunting trip in rural Clark County near Dubois, Idaho. Before dawn, he and a companion were preparing to hunt mule deer in the Caribou–Targhee National Forest when a rifle was being taken out of its case and discharged. The round struck Kaas in the leg; despite efforts to reach help, he succumbed to blood loss before paramedics arrived, according to local authorities.
He was a longtime lieutenant with the Riverside County Sheriff's Office in California and was visiting eastern Idaho for the hunt.
Witness accounts given to reporters described the shooting as accidental and said the shot was fired by a relative or hunting partner. Clark County's sheriff told area media that the injury was to the leg and fatal because of hemorrhage at the scene.
