Ronte L. Davis, a 36-year-old Black/African American man from Milwaukee, was killed on the night of May 25, 2025, after what his family described as a minor traffic accident that suddenly escalated into gunfire. Davis had been spending part of the Memorial Day weekend with relatives, and according to his godmother, Georgia Thompson, he and his brother had just left a family gathering when the confrontation occurred near Union Cemetery on Milwaukee’s north side.
Milwaukee police were
called to the area of North Teutonia Avenue and West Ring Street at approximately 9:05 p.m. Officers found that two people had been shot. Davis suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, who was reported to be 37, survived the shooting and was transported to a hospital with nonfatal gunshot wounds. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently identified the man killed in the shooting as Ronte L. Davis of Milwaukee.
Thompson told FOX6 that the violence began after another driver struck Davis’s vehicle. Her account indicated that Davis’s brother got out of the vehicle and approached the other driver to ask for insurance information. Instead of the encounter remaining a routine exchange following a collision, Thompson said the other driver produced a gun and opened fire, striking the brothers. Her description provided a possible explanation for what led to the shooting, although Milwaukee police initially said they were still investigating the circumstances and had not publicly confirmed all aspects of the family’s account.
The shooting left Davis’s relatives devastated, particularly because the family believed the confrontation had begun with something as ordinary as exchanging information after an accident. Thompson publicly described the family as torn apart by his death and expressed frustration over gun violence in the city. Davis’s killing occurred during an especially violent Memorial Day weekend in Milwaukee in which police investigated several separate shootings across the city.
In the immediate aftermath, police did not announce the identity of a suspected gunman. Investigators described themselves as seeking unknown or known suspect or suspects and asked anyone with information to come forward. Reporting through May 27 stated that no one had been taken into custody and that detectives were continuing to investigate what led to the shooting.
No later credible online reporting located for this synopsis announced an arrest, publicly identified a suspect, or reported homicide charges, a trial, or a conviction in connection with Davis’s death. The available public record therefore leaves the case without a publicly announced resolution, despite the family’s account that the shooter was the driver involved in the preceding collision. Police asked anyone with information about the killing to contact the Milwaukee Police Department at 414-935-7360 or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or the P3 Tips application.
