Miguel Angel Lara Guizar, 19, a Hispanic/Latino male, was shot at Hund Memorial Park in Mattawa, Washington, on the evening of Aug. 17, 2025. First responders were called around 8 p.m., and he was found with gunshot wounds after what witnesses described as a drive-by shooting while he was playing basketball with others at the park. He was transported to a regional hospital outside the area, where he died the following day.
His death was later confirmed in funeral notices published by local funeral homes.
Investigators from the Mattawa Police Department, Moses Lake Police Department Major Crimes Unit, and the Grant County Sheriff's Office worked the case, initially appealing for public tips. Early reports identified the victim publicly and noted that no suspects had been named as detectives canvassed the neighborhood and reviewed evidence from the park. Gun Memorial also recorded the incident, listing the Mattawa shooting on Aug. 17 and naming the victim.
Within weeks, police announced arrests in connection with the killing: two 16-year-old boys from the Mattawa area were taken into custody on Sept. 4 and booked into the Chelan County Juvenile Detention Center. Authorities did not release the juveniles' names, citing the ongoing investigation, and said no further details would be provided at that time. Local coverage reiterated the account that the victim had been shot during a drive-by while playing basketball and confirmed the arrests were directly tied to the death at Hund Memorial Park. As of those announcements, the case remained open and under investigation.
