On a Saturday evening in Seabrook, South Carolina, a community gathering took a tragic turn, ending the life of 18-year-old Jayquan Roderick James Young. The fatal incident occurred on June 1, 2025, outside a community center on Seabrook Center Road where numerous people, including families and children, were present.
According to reports from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the scene just before 6:30 p.m. and found Young unresponsive with a gunshot wound.
A witness informed investigators that prior to the sound of a single gunshot, they had observed Young and another man 'playing with a gun.' The witness reportedly advised them to put the weapon away due to the presence of children. It is believed that Young then placed the gun in his pocket.
The Beaufort County Coroner's Office officially identified Jayquan Young and pronounced him dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified a person of interest, the same individual who was reportedly with Young and the firearm. This person was located, interviewed by deputies, and his cellphone was seized as part of the ongoing investigation. However, he was released pending further inquiries, and no arrests have been made in connection with the death.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has stated that the investigation is active and has not yet classified Young's death as a homicide. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County.
