A decorated Master Gunnery Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and a veteran of the Vietnam War, Sutton was a career military man who lived with his wife and their seven-year-old daughter in the High Hills Farms section of the township. The evening of his death, his wife and daughter had gone to Philadelphia for a late-night Chinese food run. His wife reportedly returned home briefly, stating she had forgotten her purse, before leaving again.
Shortly before 1 a.m., upon their final return home, Sutton's wife and daughter made a horrifying discovery. James Sutton was found in the recreation room on the lower level of their home, having been shot multiple times.
Investigators found a trail of shell casings from a 9mm automatic weapon leading from the front door, which was found ajar, to the sofa where Sutton's body lay. Despite the violent scene, there were no signs of forced entry, leading detectives to believe that Sutton may have known his killer. The timing of the murder, just after Veterans Day, added a layer of tragedy to the event.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, authorities launched a thorough investigation.
