The events of that morning were stark and distressing. Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at the facility around 10:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, they found Dennis Recker with a gunshot wound to the chest. His wife, Harriett, was in the room with him, holding a revolver. According to a witness, a staff member who had momentarily left the room to find a chair heard a loud noise and rushed back to find the scene.
