In the early morning hours of August 11, 2025, the community of Lower Brule, South Dakota, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Tayshawn Battese. A talented athlete, known for his prowess on both the basketball court and the football field, Battese was fatally shot in an incident that also resulted in the death of another young man, Teron Sazue. The shooting is reported to have occurred near an old boat ramp following a powwow.

Tayshawn was remembered by his family as a helpful and respectful young man who was a beloved son, nephew, uncle, cousin, and friend. His sudden death left his family and the wider community mourning the loss of a vibrant life cut short by what his aunt described as a "senseless act of violence." In the wake of his death, a fundraiser was established to assist his family with funeral arrangements.

The investigation into the double homicide led to federal charges against two eighteen-year-old suspects, Jami Johnson Jr. and Kingston Bagola. The charges filed against them include second-degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firearm offenses. Both Johnson and Bagola pleaded not guilty in federal court. A third individual suspected of being involved in the incident reportedly died from a self-inflicted wound.

Following the shooting, a manhunt ensued for Kingston Bagola, who was considered at large for two days. This prompted safety measures at St. Francis Indian School, including a lock-out. The search concluded when Bagola surrendered to authorities. He was then taken into federal custody and held without bond. Tribal leaders expressed their sorrow for the victims and their families, calling for community support during the difficult time.
