In the late summer of 2025, the community of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, was shaken by the tragic death of one of its own. Detective Sergeant Cody Michael Becker, a 39-year-old male and a respected member of the Northern York County Regional Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on September 17, 2025. His death, which occurred during what authorities described as a brutal ambush, also claimed the lives of two of his colleagues, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah
Emenheiser.
A standout athlete in his youth, Cody Becker was a 2004 graduate of Spring Grove Area High School, where he excelled in football, wrestling, and baseball. He continued his wrestling career at Millersville University, becoming a two-time NCAA Division I national qualifier. After graduating in 2008, he returned to his hometown and joined the Northern York County Regional Police Department, where he would serve for 16 years, rising to the rank of Detective Sergeant. His career was marked by acts of heroism, including a 2010 incident where he rescued a mother and her three children from a burning building by catching them as they escaped from a second-story window.
On that fateful September day, Becker and his fellow officers were part of a team attempting to serve a warrant in what was described as a stalking case. The detectives were investigating a property in North Codorus Township where a 24-year-old man, Matthew James Ruth, was suspected of stalking his ex-girlfriend. As the officers approached the unlocked front door of the home, the suspect, who was armed with an AR-style rifle, began firing from inside.
The sudden and violent ambush resulted in the deaths of Detective Sergeant Becker, Detective Baker, and Detective Emenheiser. Two other officers who were on the scene engaged in a gunfight with the suspect, ultimately killing him. One of the surviving officers was also injured in the exchange. Authorities believe the suspect had intended to harm his ex-girlfriend and her mother, who had left the home for their safety. Following the incident, the community mourned the loss of the three dedicated officers, with funeral services and public memorials held to honor their sacrifice.
