In the quiet, rural community of Lorane, Oregon, a tragedy unfolded on a summer evening that ended the life of Patricia Marie McSperitt, a 56-year-old White/Caucasian woman. On July 16, 2025, Lane County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 28600 block of West Hill Road following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the home she co-owned with her husband, they discovered Patricia deceased from gunshot wounds.
The scene, located about 20 miles southwest of Eugene, quickly became the center of an intensive homicide investigation.
Authorities immediately identified the suspect as her husband, 56-year-old Ralph William McSperitt. As law enforcement began a search for him, multiple agencies, including the Oregon State Police, Cottage Grove Police Department, and the FBI, were called in to assist. The search for Ralph McSperitt concluded in the early hours of the following day, July 17th, when he was located in front of the Lane County Jail in downtown Eugene. He was arrested without incident at approximately 12:30 a.m. and lodged in the jail.
Following his arrest, Ralph William McSperitt was charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with his wife's death. The charge of second-degree murder suggests an intentional killing that was not premeditated. In a subsequent court appearance on July 25, 2025, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. He remains in custody at the Lane County Jail as the legal proceedings continue. His next court date was scheduled for August 25th.
