Rufino Gonzalez, aged 72, tragically lost his life on March 1, 2022, in Monte Rio, California. The incident occurred in the morning when Rufino was shot with a rifle. The suspect, identified as Francisco Gonzalez, 32, Rufino's son, fled the scene before deputies arrived. Francisco, described as a transient, was later apprehended without incident after a resident recognized him from a sheriff's community alert and reported his location to the authorities.
The investigation revealed that Francisco Gonzalez had shot his father multiple times. Following the shooting, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the area east of Bohemian Highway and south and east of the river due to the ongoing threat. The search for Francisco involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including a SWAT team, hostage negotiators, drones, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter. He was eventually located and arrested near Green Valley Road, approximately eight miles from the crime scene. Francisco was booked on charges of murder, committing a felony with a gun, and gun violations, and he was held without bail.
