Clara Richards, 74, a Black woman from Lillington, North Carolina, died on August 12, 2025, after being shot at a family home on Kentucky Derby Lane in the Trotter’s Ridge neighborhood. Deputies were called just after 5:15 p.m. when a 10-year-old inside the house dialed 911. Inside, they found Danny Richards, 57, and his wife, Sabrina Richards, 54, fatally wounded, and Clara Richards, 74, critically injured; she was rushed to the hospital and later died of her injuries.
The gathering had been a birthday celebration for Sabrina, a detail that deepened the shock that rippled across Harnett and Cumberland counties, where the family was known for service and church work.
Investigators quickly focused on a teenage relative who had been living with the family. By the time deputies arrived, the 15-year-old had left the scene in a family vehicle; the truck was later found abandoned near N.C. 87 and Nursery Road by Spring Lake.
