In Enid, Oklahoma, a beloved 72-year-old public safety officer, JW Bode, a White/Caucasian male, lost his life in a heroic act of duty on a late Sunday night in August. The tragic events began to unfold around 11 p.m. on August 17, 2025, when Enid police responded to a domestic disturbance call. The suspect in the disturbance had fled the initial scene, and his vehicle was soon located at the Integris Health Enid Hospital.
When officers approached the suspect's vehicle at the hospital's
emergency entrance, the man, later identified as 46-year-old Dedrick Bloss, opened fire on them. Bloss then entered the hospital, where he was confronted by JW Bode, who was on duty as a public safety officer. In the ensuing chaos, Bode was struck by gunfire. He was remembered by loved ones and colleagues as a hero who bravely approached the suspect to protect others.
Responding officers pursued Bloss into the hospital, where an exchange of gunfire resulted in Bloss being shot and killed at the scene. Tragically, JW Bode succumbed to his injuries and passed away on August 18, 2025. Because the sole suspect in Bode's death was killed during the confrontation, no arrests were made in connection with the case. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was tasked with leading the investigation into the incident. In the days that followed, the Enid community mourned the loss of the veteran, retired probation and parole officer, and cherished grandfather, who was honored with a funeral service attended by the Enid Police Department Honor Guard.
