On what should have been a celebratory Mother's Day, May 11, 2025, the life of 45-year-old Michelle Whiting of Gloucester City, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a violent act that ended in a fiery explosion. A mother of three, Whiting was found deceased in the Sewell home of her ex-boyfriend, 59-year-old Daniel Steele, in what authorities have officially ruled a murder-suicide. The grim discovery was made in the early morning hours after neighbors reported a loud explosion and a house fully engulfed in flames on Tranquility Court.
Investigators pieced together a harrowing timeline of events. It is believed that Steele shot and killed Whiting, a female, inside his residence before intentionally causing the devastating blast. Evidence at the scene indicated that the gas line to the home had been tampered with, and an accelerant was used to ensure the unrestricted flow of natural gas, leading to the explosion that leveled the house and damaged neighboring properties.
First responders located Whiting's body in a bedroom, where the medical examiner later determined she had died from a gunshot wound to the head prior to the fire.
The perpetrator, Daniel Steele, was found in the living room with a handgun near his body. His death was ruled a suicide caused by the fire.
