In the early morning hours, the quiet streets of Howell, New Jersey, became the backdrop for a tragic discovery. Rolando Acte Mejia, a 36-year-old male, was found deceased inside his vehicle on White Street. The initial response from the Howell Police Department quickly escalated into a full-blown homicide investigation as it was determined that Mejia had been fatally shot. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office joined the investigation, and the area was cordoned off as a crime scene.
As investigators began to piece together the events leading to his death, a complex and personal motive started to emerge. It was revealed that Rolando Acte Mejia was involved in an affair with the wife of another Howell resident, Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza. Despite Mejia's attempts to end the relationship, the woman reportedly continued to pursue him.
On the night of the incident, Mejia was on the phone with her while parked near a local Wawa.
The investigation took a significant turn when surveillance footage and cell phone records were analyzed. Authorities allege that Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza, 33, used a white Ford Explorer equipped with aftermarket emergency lights, similar to an unmarked police cruiser, to pull over Rolando Acte Mejia's vehicle. It is believed that under this guise, Yanza approached the vehicle and shot Mejia. Two 9mm shell casings and a projectile were recovered from inside the victim's car.
Following the evidence gathered, law enforcement officials arrested Juan Jesus Mejia Yanza at his home in Howell. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and two related second-degree weapons offenses in connection with the shooting death of Rolando Acte Mejia. The investigation involved multiple locations throughout Howell and included the presence of the Monmouth County SWAT team during the course of the inquiry.
