In the predawn hours of a quiet Sunday in Portageville, Missouri, the body of David Lynn Chamberlain, a 50-year-old White/Caucasian male, was discovered lying in the roadway. It was June 22, 2025, when officers responded to the intersection of 5th Street and Warren Avenue to find Chamberlain unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. The New Madrid County Coroner, George DeLisle, pronounced him dead at the scene.
This violent end to a life that had been spent in construction, automotive repair, and even some time working on a riverboat deck crew, sent ripples through the community.
The subsequent investigation by the New Madrid County Sheriff's Office and the Portageville Police Department soon led to a significant breakthrough. An 18-year-old from Portageville, Trey Sutton, was arrested in connection with the death. He was subsequently charged with the serious offenses of murder in the first degree and armed criminal action. The investigation didn't stop with Sutton, as law enforcement officials also took five other individuals into custody. These five were not charged with murder, but faced accusations of tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance, suggesting a wider circle of involvement in the events surrounding Chamberlain's death.
