On a Saturday evening in Gulfport, Mississippi, a gathering of family and friends at West Side Park turned into a scene of tragedy. On June 14, 2025, Rickey Damascus Durr, a 33-year-old Black male from Magee, was shot. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. during what was described as a celebration. Emergency services were called to the park after reports of gunfire.
Durr was quickly transported to Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to a gunshot wound and died around 6:00 p.m.
The Gulfport Police Department swiftly began an investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives identified 32-year-old Kendall Jamal McCall of Jackson as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. Investigators indicated that the shooting was the result of an ongoing feud involving McCall. However, they clarified that Rickey Durr was not involved in the dispute and was an unintended victim who was struck by a bullet to the chest. After the shooting, McCall fled the scene, and authorities warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
A month after the shooting, on July 15, 2025, Kendall Jamal McCall turned himself in to the authorities. He was taken into custody in connection with the killing of Rickey Durr. Following his surrender, McCall was held at the Harrison County jail with his bond set at $1 million.
