On a Saturday evening in Foxworth, Mississippi, a tragic event unfolded at the intersection of Taylor Cutoff Road and Highway 586, ending the life of 35-year-old Shanetra Marie Batie of Purvis. Authorities were called to the scene around 5:00 PM following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies and first responders discovered Shanetra Batie deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
The incident is being investigated as a suspected murder-attempted suicide.
The suspect in her death was identified as her 31-year-old husband, Christever Batie of Kokomo. A witness reported to authorities that an eight-year-old child had fled from the vehicle involved in the shooting and was unharmed. The same witness also saw a man, who had also been shot, leave the scene in a vehicle, providing deputies with a description and tag number.
Shortly after the initial call, deputies located the suspect's abandoned vehicle behind the Christian Hill Baptist Church on Water Valley Road in Foxworth. A search of the nearby woods led to the discovery of Christever Batie, who was suffering from what was later described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Further investigation revealed that Christever Batie is a registered sex offender with previous felony charges. He has since been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon while he remains in custody at the hospital. The investigation into the death of Shanetra Marie Batie is ongoing.
