In the small community of Willmar, Minnesota, the life of 17-year-old Joel W. "JuJu" Eberle Jr. was cut tragically short on the evening of Monday, May 12, 2025. The young man, known for his infectious smile and fiercely protective nature, was the victim of a fatal shooting that has left his family and friends reeling.
Joel, who was born on December 4, 2007, attended ALC High School and was a member of the First Covenant Church in Willmar.
He had a passion for drawing and a deep love for rap music. Those who knew him remember a young man with a heart of gold, who enjoyed spending his time at Epik and had a particular fondness for ramen noodles seasoned with hot sauce and lemon pepper. His presence was described as a gift, and his laughter and giant heart left a lasting impact on those around him.
The circumstances of his death unfolded around 11 p.m. on that Monday evening, when Willmar Police received a report of shots fired on the 1800 block of 7th Avenue Southeast. Upon their arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive male teenager. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Joel was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of mid-May, the Willmar Police Department's investigation into Joel's death was ongoing, and no arrests had been announced. Authorities have stated that the shooting does not appear to be a random act and that they do not believe there is a danger to the public.
