In the morning hours of August 13, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of Faraday Street in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood. When the echo of the shots faded, Wendy Nunez-Calderon, a 49-year-old Hispanic woman from Dorchester, was left with fatal injuries. She was a passenger in a green Subaru when the shooting occurred around 10 a.m. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Nunez-Calderon succumbed to her injuries about an hour later.
Another individual, a man identified as Yonny Peguero German, was also shot and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Family and friends of Nunez-Calderon, who was originally from Villa Sombrero, Bani, in the Dominican Republic, remembered her as a "ray of sunshine" and a beautiful soul who was very caring and made friends with everyone she met. Her loved ones were visibly distraught, grieving openly outside the courthouse during the suspect's arraignment.
Police on the scene discovered eight spent nine-millimeter shell casings. They arrested 41-year-old Jonathan Hernandez of Hyde Park in connection with the shooting. Responding officers found Hernandez lying in the middle of the street at the scene. He was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on charges of murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to murder. During the court appearance, Hernandez hid behind a door, out of view. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was ordered to be held without bail.
While city officials have described the shooting as a targeted incident, the motive remains unclear. The family of Wendy Nunez-Calderon has stated that she did not know Hernandez. The surviving victim, however, identified Hernandez as the shooter to the police. A probable cause hearing for Hernandez has been scheduled for September 23.
