In the quiet community of Sidney, Kentucky, the life of 50-year-old James Todd Mounts, a male, came to a sudden and violent end on a Sunday in the middle of summer. On July 13, 2025, an altercation at a residence on Dix Fork Road turned fatal. Kentucky State Police were called to the home of Clifford Triplett, who was 54 years old at the time.
According to Triplett's account to the police, he and Mounts had gotten into a physical struggle.
Triplett claimed that during this fight, a gun he was holding discharged accidentally, firing the shot that killed James Mounts. Following the immediate investigation into the shooting, authorities took Triplett into custody. He was initially charged with second-degree manslaughter and booked into the Pike County Detention Center without bond.
As the legal process unfolded, the initial account of an accidental death was re-examined. After Triplett's arraignment on the manslaughter charge, he was released from custody. However, the case was presented to a Pike County grand jury. After hearing the evidence in September, the grand jury decided to elevate the charge against Clifford Triplett, handing down an indictment for murder. This new, more severe charge carried a potential sentence of 20 to 50 years or even life in prison, a significant increase from the 5-to-10 years for the original manslaughter charge. Authorities subsequently re-arrested Triplett, and he was once again held without bond.
