In the bleak expanse of a Las Vegas desert area, the body of 37-year-old Caucasian female Cynthia Elaine Oquist was discovered on February 6, 1998. A homeless man stumbled upon her remains near the Las Vegas Wash and Vegas Valley Boulevard and promptly alerted a nearby patrol officer. Investigators determined that her body had been lying there for three to five days before being found. An autopsy later revealed the grim details of her demise: Cynthia had been a victim of blunt force trauma and strangulation.
Initially, the identity of the victim was unknown, but authorities were able to identify her through fingerprints. In life, Cynthia was a mother of six who had moved to Las Vegas from California. The investigation into her murder uncovered that she was last seen in downtown Las Vegas, where she had been working as a sex worker. Her case took a significant turn when another woman, also a sex worker, came forward with a harrowing story of survival. She had been the victim of an attempted murder and believed her attacker was the same man last seen with Cynthia.
Based on the survivor's account, a composite sketch of the suspect was created and released to the public. The man was described as a white male in his late 30s, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build, dark hair, and brown eyes. The survivor also provided details about his vehicle, a full-sized truck, possibly a Chevrolet, with a gray interior and dusty, tinted windows. The truck may have also had a silver-colored toolbox in the bed.
Despite the detailed description and the composite sketch, no arrests were ever made in connection with Cynthia Oquist's murder. The identity of the man who ended her life remains a mystery, and her case is one of many unsolved homicides. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has, in the years since, continued to seek information from the public, hoping that someone might come forward with the key to solving this cold case.
