In the predawn hours of September 7, 2025, a violent sequence of events in Haysville, Kansas, culminated in the death of 43-year-old Jesse Dean Rau, a White male. The incident began to unfold at approximately 2:58 a.m. when Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received an automated crash detection alert from a mobile device, leading first responders to the 7700 block of South Broadway.
There, they discovered an SUV that had veered off the road and collided with a tree.
Inside the wrecked vehicle, emergency personnel found Rau critically injured, not from the crash itself, but from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A female passenger in the SUV sustained minor injuries from the collision. Investigators quickly determined that the crash was a consequence of a more sinister event that had transpired inside the vehicle.
Detectives believe that a disturbance broke out among at least three occupants of the SUV, during which Rau was shot by another passenger. Following the shooting, the vehicle left the roadway and struck the tree. The suspected shooter, described as a white male in his mid-30s, fled the scene on foot, heading west. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office warned that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
The investigation rapidly led law enforcement to a suspect. The following day, deputies from the Sedgwick County Fugitive Warrant Section located 37-year-old James R. Standefer of Wichita at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of West Shade Lane in Wichita. The presence of the suspect prompted a brief evacuation of the complex and a call-out of the SWAT team. After a short standoff, Standefer surrendered to authorities without further incident at 5:40 p.m. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on requested charges of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of Jesse Dean Rau.
