In the quiet, rural landscape of Mystic, Iowa, a violent encounter on July 15, 2025, ended the life of 36-year-old Destry Walker, a White male. The Appanoose County Sheriff's office received a call about a shooting on 470th Street at approximately 10:32 p.m. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered both Destry and his 62-year-old father, Randy Walker, with gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders, Destry was pronounced dead at the scene.
His father was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines for medical treatment.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led law enforcement to a suspect. While authorities were at the scene of the shooting, they were alerted to a motorcycle crash and an altercation that had occurred about five miles away. At the crash site, officials found 51-year-old Robert Barrell hiding in some weeds. Based on evidence gathered from both the scene of the shooting and the motorcycle crash, Barrell was taken into custody.
Robert Barrell was subsequently charged with one count of Murder in the First Degree for the death of Destry Walker and one count of Attempted Murder for the shooting of Randy Walker. He was then booked into the Appanoose County Jail. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing to uncover the motive and the full circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
