In the quiet town of Hays, Kansas, a dedicated police sergeant, Scott Heimann, a 32-year-old White male, lost his life in the line of duty on Sunday, September 28, 2025. A nine-year veteran of the Hays Police Department, Heimann was known for his unwavering commitment and positive presence in the community. The events that led to the tragic end of his life began with a domestic violence call late on a Saturday night.
Just before midnight on September 27th, a woman fled a residence on
Downing Street, reporting that her significant other had struck her vehicle with his truck as she tried to escape. She found safety in a neighbor's home while officers were dispatched to the scene. As Sergeant Heimann and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were establishing a perimeter around the suspect's house at approximately 2:00 a.m., a single shot was fired from within the residence, striking Heimann.
Immediate life-saving measures were administered at the scene, and Sergeant Heimann was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries just after 4:00 a.m. Following the shooting, a standoff ensued with the barricaded suspect, identified as 34-year-old Zane Wickham. Tactical teams negotiated with Wickham for several hours before entering the home around 6:15 a.m., where they found him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation confirmed that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident. As the sole suspect took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with Sergeant Heimann's death.
