In the quiet town of Glenwood, Iowa, a neighborhood dispute on August 6, 2025, escalated into a tragic event that claimed the lives of a married couple. Stevie Oman, a 35-year-old Caucasian female, and her 38-year-old husband, Brandon Oman, were shot outside a residence in the 400 block of North Grove Street. The incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. when the Mills County Emergency Communication Center was flooded with calls reporting a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers from the
Glenwood Police Department, the Mills County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa State Patrol discovered a house at 405 North Grove Street engulfed in flames. Outside the burning home, they found the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Brandon Oman was pronounced dead at the scene. Stevie Oman was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, but she later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation quickly identified a suspect, 71-year-old Dennis Burnell, who lived at the address that was on fire. Law enforcement took Burnell into custody as he emerged from his burning residence. He had sustained critical injuries during the incident and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting was the result of an ongoing interpersonal dispute between Burnell and the Omans.
Dennis Burnell, the man identified as responsible for the deaths of Stevie and Brandon Oman, later died from the injuries he sustained during the incident. Reports indicate that he had a history of harassing neighbors. The investigation into the double homicide was conducted by the Glenwood Police Department, the Mills County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the State Fire Marshal Division.
