Just before midnight on July 4, 2025, fireworks still crackled over Santa Maria when police were dispatched at about 11:22 p.m. to the 300 block of West Lolita Lane. Officers found Brandon Mendez Cabrera, 25, a man from Santa Maria, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, his death later noted in a local obituary.
