Martin Guerrero was driving through Chicago’s Humboldt Park in the early hours of August 24, 2025, when a traffic crash on the 3800 block of West Chicago Avenue brought his car to a stop. Another vehicle pulled up; its driver stepped out and shot Guerrero several times in the chest before fleeing, according to police. Guerrero, who lived in Morris, Illinois, was rushed to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead that morning.
Detectives have said the attack followed immediately after the crash, and by that day’s end no one was in custody. In the days that followed, authorities described the gunman only as an unknown assailant and appealed for tips while canvassing the stretch of West Chicago Avenue where the ambush unfolded around 1:45–2:00 a.m.
As the investigation entered September, Cook County Crime Stoppers offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or indictment, underscoring that the case remained open and unsolved. Local reports reiterated that no motive had been publicly identified and that detectives continued to seek witnesses and video from the area.
Loved ones later memorialized Guerrero in an obituary noting his roots in Morris and the family who survived him, while community gun-violence trackers added his name to the rolls of 2025 victims. Through late September, police had not announced arrests or named suspects, and the reward notice remained active as investigators continued to pursue leads.
