Joel German Mercado, 16, a Hispanic/Latino male, was spending a summer Saturday night at a back-to-school house and pool party in Covina on August 16, 2025, when the gathering unraveled into chaos. Shortly after 10 p.m., shots rang out and panicked teens fled through the quiet subdivision; Mercado was struck and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. County authorities later identified him and opened a homicide investigation, confirming he had died from a gunshot wound.
