In the early morning hours of June 14, 2025, the life of 38-year-old Shawn Christian Watson, a Black / African American male from Ariton, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Authorities were called to his residence on West Main Street shortly after 2:30 a.m. following a 911 call made by one of the five children in the home who heard gunshots. Upon arrival, Dale County Sheriff's deputies discovered Watson unresponsive in his bed; he was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into Watson's death quickly led to the arrest of his 42-year-old wife, Annie Huffstutler. Investigators believe that she shot her husband while he was sleeping. While the children, who were present in the house at the time of the incident, heard the gunshots, none of them witnessed the shooting itself. Huffstutler was taken into custody and booked into the Dale County Jail on a murder charge, where she is being held without bond.
Authorities have not yet released a motive for the killing. Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum described the event as a "tragic event for this family" and stated that a local social services organization has been contacted to provide assistance and grief counseling to the family. An obituary for Shawn, who was also known as "Dragon," remembered him as a beloved father, son, and brother who had a passion for the outdoors, martial arts, old movies, and gardening.
