On the evening of August 12, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Gilbert, Arizona, extended stay hotel. When police arrived at the scene near Country Club Drive and Guadalupe Road, they discovered 39-year-old Jessica Brewer with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The incident began to unfold just before 6 p.m.
as multiple people dialed 911 to report the sound of gunshots erupting in the motel's parking lot.
Jessica, her husband Rodney Brewer, and their dog had just pulled into a parking space in their SUV when a man emerged from a nearby room and opened fire on their vehicle. While Rodney was not physically harmed in the barrage of bullets, Jessica was fatally wounded. The couple's dog was also struck by the gunfire but managed to survive its injuries. The alleged shooter was later identified as 56-year-old J. John Alderman, a resident of the motel.
Following the shooting, Alderman barricaded himself inside his room. After approximately thirty minutes of negotiations with law enforcement, he surrendered and was taken into custody. A grand jury later indicted Alderman on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and animal cruelty. He has since entered a plea of not guilty to the charges, with a trial scheduled to take place in April of the following year. Jessica Dawn Brewer, born on January 27, 1986, was a devoted mother of three sons.
